What happens to leadership roles as AI capabilities expand?
Leadership roles will evolve, not disappear. The administrative, analytical, and routine decision-making components of leadership are increasingly automated. What remains—and becomes more important—are distinctly human capabilities: setting vision in uncertainty, building trust, navigating organizational politics, developing people, making judgment calls that balance competing values, inspiring commitment, managing change, thinking creatively about problems AI can't even recognize. The leaders who thrive will be those who embrace this shift rather than resisting it. They'll develop new skills for collaborating with AI while deepening their development of irreplaceable human capabilities. The leaders who struggle will be those who defined their value through tasks that are increasingly automated. Here's the uncomfortable but liberating truth: if AI can do your leadership job, you weren't actually leading—you were managing execution. True leadership was always about the human elements. AI just makes that distinction more obvious. The future belongs to leaders who can orchestrate collaboration between human and artificial intelligence while maintaining the humanity that makes organizations worth building.
